What Is the Appeal to Ignorance Fallacy?

An appeal to ignorance argues that something must be true because it hasn't been proven false, or false because it hasn't been proven true. The absence of evidence is treated as evidence, when it's actually just an absence.

Also known as Argumentum ad Ignorantiam, this is a informal fallacy — the error lies in the content or context of the argument rather than its formal structure.

How to Spot It

Example

"Nobody has proven that this supplement doesn't work, so it must be effective." Lack of disproof is not the same as proof.

A Stronger Version

"Two randomized controlled trials found no statistically significant benefit from this supplement compared to placebo. Until positive evidence emerges, there's no reason to expect it works."

Warning Signs

  • Claiming something is true because it hasn't been disproven
  • Claiming something is false because it hasn't been proven
  • Shifting the burden of proof to the skeptic
  • Treating unknowns as confirmation

How to Fix It

The burden of proof falls on whoever makes the claim. 'We don't know it's false' is very different from 'we know it's true.' Look for positive evidence rather than relying on the absence of negative evidence.
