What Is the Argument from Consequences Fallacy?

This fallacy argues that a claim is true or false based on whether its consequences would be pleasant or unpleasant. How we feel about an outcome doesn't determine whether the underlying claim is factually correct.

Also known as Argumentum ad Consequentiam, this is a informal fallacy — the error lies in the content or context of the argument rather than its formal structure.

How to Spot It

Example

"If free will doesn't exist, then criminals can't be held responsible, which would be chaos. Therefore, free will must exist." The unpleasantness of the consequence doesn't settle the philosophical question.

A Stronger Version

"The question of whether free will exists is separate from how society should handle criminal behavior. Legal responsibility can be grounded in deterrence and public safety regardless of the metaphysical debate."

Warning Signs

  • Arguing a claim is true because its truth would be beneficial
  • Arguing a claim is false because its truth would be harmful
  • Conflating desirability with truth
  • Using worst-case scenarios to reject factual claims

How to Fix It

Ask yourself: am I evaluating whether this is true, or whether I want it to be true? These are different questions. Uncomfortable truths are still truths.
