Circular reasoning occurs when an argument's conclusion is used as one of its premises. The argument assumes the very thing it's trying to prove, creating a loop where nothing is actually demonstrated.
Also known as Begging the Question, this is a informal fallacy — the error lies in the content or context of the argument rather than its formal structure.
How to Spot It
Example
"This newspaper is reliable because it says so in the newspaper." The source's reliability is the very thing in question.
