What Is the Gambler's Fallacy?

The gambler's fallacy believes that past random events affect the probability of future random events. If a coin has landed heads five times in a row, the gambler's fallacy says tails is 'due' — but the coin has no memory.

Also known as Monte Carlo Fallacy, this is a informal fallacy — the error lies in the content or context of the argument rather than its formal structure.

How to Spot It

Example

"The stock has dropped five days in a row, so it's bound to go up tomorrow." Each day's movement is influenced by new information, not by the streak's length.

A Stronger Version

"The stock has dropped five consecutive days. Let's examine what's driving the decline — earnings miss, sector rotation, or broader market conditions — to assess whether the trend is likely to continue."

Warning Signs

  • Believing an outcome is 'due' after a streak
  • Thinking past random events influence future probability
  • Patterns seen in independent random events
  • Using 'law of averages' incorrectly

How to Fix It

Independent events have no memory. A fair coin doesn't know it landed heads five times. Evaluate each event based on its own probability, not based on what came before it.

Paste your text above to scan for gambler's fallacy patterns and other reasoning errors. Each flagged passage includes an explanation and a suggestion for making the argument stronger.
