In a passive sentence, the subject receives the action instead of performing it. The typical pattern is "subject + form of 'to be' + past participle": "The report was written by the analyst." In the active version, the actor comes first: "The analyst wrote the report."
Passive voice isn't always wrong, but overusing it makes writing feel indirect, wordy, and vague. This checker identifies every passive construction so you can decide which ones to keep and which to rewrite.
"The building was constructed in 1924" works fine when the builders' identity doesn't matter. Forcing an active version ("Unknown workers constructed the building in 1924") would be awkward.
Some fields use passive voice by convention: "The samples were heated to 200°C." Many style guides in the sciences still prefer this form, though the trend is shifting toward active voice even in research papers.
"Errors were found in the financial statements" avoids assigning blame directly. This can be useful when the goal is to address a problem without singling out individuals.
Active sentences are typically shorter, clearer, and more engaging. They tell the reader who did what, which keeps the narrative moving forward. Business writing guides, journalism style manuals, and academic writing centers all recommend limiting passive voice to cases where it genuinely serves a purpose.
