Sentence variety means mixing different sentence lengths, structures, and openings throughout your writing. When every sentence follows the same pattern (subject-verb-object, 12 words, starting with "The"), the text becomes monotonous and hard to stay engaged with. Varying your sentences keeps readers interested and gives your writing a natural rhythm.
The checker measures the word count of each sentence and shows you the distribution. If most of your sentences cluster around the same length, the tool flags it. A healthy mix includes short sentences (under 10 words) for emphasis, medium sentences (10 to 20 words) for standard explanations, and occasional longer sentences (20 to 30 words) for complex ideas.
English has four sentence types: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. Writing that uses only simple sentences feels choppy. Writing that uses only complex sentences feels dense. The checker shows your percentage of each type and recommends adjustments when one type dominates.
Starting too many sentences with the same word or phrase ("The project... The team... The manager...") creates a repetitive feel. The checker identifies repeated openings and suggests alternatives like starting with a prepositional phrase, an adverb, a dependent clause, or a transitional word.
Paste your text into the checker above to get a full breakdown of your sentence lengths, types, and openings, along with specific suggestions for adding variety.
