What Is the Special Pleading Fallacy?
Special pleading applies rules or standards to others but claims an exception for oneself (or one's position) without adequate justification. The exception is invented after the fact to protect the claim from counterevidence.
Also known as Ad Hoc Rescue, this is a informal fallacy — the error lies in the content or context of the argument rather than its formal structure.
How to Spot It
Example
"Every business should be transparent about pricing — except ours, because our situation is unique." If the reasoning for transparency applies generally, it applies here too unless there's a genuine, specific reason it doesn't.
A Stronger Version
"We require pricing transparency from our vendors. We should meet the same standard ourselves, or identify specific regulatory or competitive reasons that justify a difference and disclose those reasons."
Warning Signs
- Applying rules to others but not to oneself
- Inventing exceptions when a rule becomes inconvenient
- Moving goalposts when evidence appears
- Unreasonable claims of uniqueness to avoid standards
How to Fix It
If a principle is worth applying, apply it consistently. When you want to claim an exception, ask: would I accept this excuse from someone else? If the exception seems self-serving, it probably is.
