What Is the Straw Man Fallacy?
A straw man fallacy misrepresents someone's argument to make it easier to attack. Instead of addressing the actual position, the arguer creates a weaker version (the straw man) and argues against that instead.
Also known as Straw Person, this is a informal fallacy — the error lies in the content or context of the argument rather than its formal structure.
How to Spot It
Example
"She said we should consider reducing the military budget by 5%." Response: "She wants to leave our country completely defenseless!" The actual position was a modest reduction, not elimination.
A Stronger Version
"She proposed a 5% military budget reduction. Let's examine whether that specific cut would affect readiness, and which programs would be impacted."
Warning Signs
- Exaggerating the opponent's position

- Using extreme versions of moderate claims
