A wordy sentence uses more words than necessary to convey its meaning. Wordiness doesn't mean a sentence is long; it means words can be removed without losing any information. Phrases like "due to the fact that" (instead of "because"), "in order to" (instead of "to"), and "at this point in time" (instead of "now") are classic examples of verbal clutter.
Redundancies repeat an idea already expressed by another word in the phrase.
Words like "really," "very," "basically," "actually," and "just" rarely add meaning. Phrases like "it is important to note that" and "there is a need for" pad sentences without contributing substance. The checker flags these so you can cut them or replace them with stronger alternatives.
Nominalizations turn verbs into nouns, forcing you to add extra words to complete the sentence. "We made a decision to proceed" is wordier than "We decided to proceed." "The implementation of the system" is wordier than "implementing the system." The checker identifies these and suggests the more direct verb form.
"The proposal was reviewed by the committee" uses more words than "The committee reviewed the proposal." When passive voice makes a sentence longer without adding clarity, the checker flags it.
Readers process concise writing faster and retain more of the information. In professional settings, concise emails and reports respect your reader's time. In academic writing, cutting wordiness makes your arguments sharper. Tightening a 3,000-word draft to 2,400 words often makes every remaining sentence carry more weight.
Paste your text into the checker above to see every wordy construction highlighted, with a shorter alternative suggested for each one.
