Sarah Louise Delany (1889-1999) and Annie Elizabeth Delany (1891-1995), were pioneering African American sisters whose lives spanned more than a century of significant social changes. Born to a former slave who became the first African American Episcopal bishop and a mother who was an educator, the Delany sisters were trailblazers in their own right. Sarah, known as Sadie, was the first African American permitted to teach domestic science at the high school level in New York City, while Annie, known as Bessie, was the second African American woman licensed to practice dentistry in New York State.

In 1993, with the assistance of journalist Amy Hill Hearth, the sisters co-authored "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years." The book is a rich oral history that captures their personal experiences against the backdrop of key events in American history, from Reconstruction through the civil rights movement, and into the modern era.
