Queenie struggles with her own personal demons, including an abusive husband and a forbidden love affair with a Jamaican soldier.
Bernard Bligh: Bernard is Queenie's husband, a racist and abusive man who is resentful of the Jamaican lodgers living in his house. He is a former soldier who suffers from PTSD and struggles to adjust to civilian life after the war. Bernard's violent behavior towards his wife and his racist attitudes towards Gilbert and Hortense create tension and conflict within the household.
