Watership Down Study Guide
Richard Adams: A Concise Biography
Richard George Adams was born on May 9, 1920, in Newbury, Berkshire, England. He attended Bradfield College and later studied Modern History at Worcester College, Oxford. His education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the British Army. After the war, Adams returned to Oxford to complete his degree and subsequently joined the British Civil Service, where he worked for many years.
Adams' literary career began somewhat unexpectedly. He started crafting stories to entertain his daughters during long car rides, which eventually evolved into his debut novel, Watership Down. Initially rejected by several publishers, the book was finally published in 1972 and became an instant success. Adams won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize for the novel. He went on to write several other books, including Shardik (1974), The Plague Dogs (1977), and Traveller (1988).
Adams passed away on December 24, 2016, leaving behind a legacy as a master storyteller whose works continue to captivate readers of all ages.
Historical and Literary Context of Watership Down
Watership Down is set in the English countryside and follows a group of rabbits as they escape their warren threatened by human development and seek a new home. The novel was published in 1972, a time when environmental concerns were gaining prominence, partly due to the growing awareness sparked by Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962). This environmental context adds a layer of urgency and relevance to the rabbits' journey.
Literarily, Watership Down stands out for its anthropomorphic portrayal of rabbits, blending naturalistic details with human-like social structures and language. The novel draws on a rich tradition of animal-centered literature, akin to Aesop’s Fables and Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, but it also incorporates elements of epic storytelling, with its detailed world-building and heroic quest narrative.
Adams’ use of lapine language and mythology, including the creation of the rabbit folk hero El-Ahrairah, adds a unique depth to the story. The novel’s themes of survival, leadership, and the struggle against tyranny resonate broadly, appealing to both children and adults.
Watership Down has been adapted into various media, including an animated film in 1978, a television series, and a more recent Netflix/BBC miniseries in 2018, ensuring its continued influence and relevance in popular culture.
Paraphrasing is a natural part of the writing process as it helps you clarify your thinking and suit your words to your audience. Using a Rephrasely helps structure and streamline this work, and our paraphrase tool offers 20 modes, many of them free, for accomplishing just this. The 20 modes we offer are diverse, including a summarize tool, a free grammar checker, a mode to simplify text, and a sentence shortener. There are sentence rephrasers and paraphrase rephrase tools, and we pride ourselves on having both, since our reword generator accounts for context at both the sentence and paragraph levels.
When you google paraphrase you will get a variety of results, from a free Rephrasely, to an article spinner, to a general phrase tool, and it can be hard to determine which of these rephrase tools will best help you complete your work. If you simply need to get a word rephrase, that is, reword only small elements within the sentence, many tools will suffice, but there is the risk that you end up with a tool that does not consider context and produces very awkward and ungrammatical sentences. Rephrasing is very much an art, and we’ve built our paraphrase bot to produce the most correct results in 20 modes in over 100 languages, making it the best paraphrasing tool at an exceptionally low cost. So whether you need to paraphrase deutsch, paraphrase greek, or paraphrase bahasa melayu, the next time you think, I need something to paraphrase this for me, you’ll know where to turn.
