Wuthering Heights Study Guide

Emily Brontë: A Concise Biography

Emily Brontë was born on July 30, 1818, in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, and is best known for her only novel, "Wuthering Heights." She was the fifth of six children in the Brontë family, which included other notable literary figures such as her sisters Charlotte and Anne Brontë. After the death of their mother in 1821, the Brontë children were largely raised by their father, Patrick Brontë, and their aunt, Elizabeth Branwell.

The Brontë siblings were famously creative, often engaging in imaginative play and writing stories set in elaborate fantasy worlds. Emily, along with her sisters, attended the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge and later continued their education at home. Emily worked briefly as a teacher and a governess but found these roles constraining, preferring the solitude of the moors near her home in Haworth.

In 1846, Emily, Charlotte, and Anne published a joint collection of poems under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell to maintain their anonymity in a male-dominated literary world. Emily's contributions were well-received, but it was her novel, "Wuthering Heights," published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, that solidified her literary legacy. Tragically, Emily Brontë's life was cut short by tuberculosis, and she died on December 19, 1848, at the age of 30.

Context for "Wuthering Heights"

"Wuthering Heights" is a novel that defies easy categorization, blending elements of Gothic fiction, Romanticism, and social critique. It was published during the Victorian era, a time when societal norms were rigid and literature often explored themes of morality, social class, and gender roles.

The novel is set on the remote Yorkshire moors, an environment that plays a crucial role in shaping its dark and tumultuous atmosphere. The story centers around the intense and often destructive relationship between Heathcliff, an orphan of mysterious origins, and Catherine Earnshaw, the daughter of Heathcliff's benefactor. Their passionate, ill-fated love defies social conventions and leads to a cycle of revenge and tragedy that spans generations.

Upon its release, "Wuthering Heights" received mixed reviews. Some critics were shocked by its raw emotion and complex characters, which contrasted sharply with the more restrained and moralistic literature of the time. However, others praised its originality and powerful storytelling. Over time, the novel has gained recognition as a masterpiece of English literature, noted for its innovative narrative structure, psychological depth, and exploration of themes such as love, revenge, and the supernatural.

In the broader context of the 19th century, "Wuthering Heights" can be seen as a response to the Romantic movement's focus on individualism and emotional intensity, while also prefiguring the psychological realism that would become prominent in later literary works. Emily Brontë's unique voice and bold narrative vision have ensured that "Wuthering Heights" remains a subject of fascination and scholarly study to this day.
