Whereas: Direct Comparison
"Whereas" places two facts side by side to highlight how they differ. There's no element of surprise or concession. You're simply pointing out a distinction.
- Coffee is a stimulant, whereas chamomile tea is a relaxant.
- She prefers working in the morning, whereas her brother does his best work at night.
- The first edition sold modestly, whereas the second became a bestseller.
Key Grammatical Differences
"Although" can appear at the beginning or middle of a sentence. It introduces a dependent clause that cannot stand alone.
"Whereas" typically joins two independent clauses or appears at the start of a clause in formal and legal writing. In legal contexts, "whereas" often opens preamble statements: "Whereas the parties agree to the following terms..."
When They're Not Interchangeable
You cannot swap these words freely. "Although" always implies concession. If you write "Coffee is a stimulant, although chamomile tea is a relaxant," the sentence suggests something unexpected, which doesn't fit a straightforward comparison.
Similarly, "Whereas he studied all night, he felt unprepared" sounds odd because "whereas" doesn't carry a sense of surprise.
