What Makes "Before" an Adverb?

In each case, "before" appears without an object or a following clause. It simply tells you when something happened.

Preposition (followed by a noun or pronoun):

We arrived before noon.

Conjunction (followed by a clause):

Before the sun set, they reached the cabin.

Adverb (standing alone):

I've heard that song before.
The day before, everything had been calm.

Position in the Sentence

Adverbial "before" typically appears at the end of a sentence or clause. Placing it at the beginning or middle is possible but less common and often requires rewording.

End position: I haven't been here before.
Mid position (with additional context): The night before, a storm had knocked out the power.

When "before" appears at the start of a sentence followed by a comma, it usually functions as part of a time phrase like "before long" or "the day before," not purely as a standalone adverb.

"Before" vs. "Previously" and "Earlier"

As an adverb, "before" overlaps with "previously" and "earlier." The differences are subtle:

"Before" is the most conversational and versatile.
"Previously" is more formal and often appears in academic or professional writing.
"Earlier" is specific about relative time within a defined period.
