Elapse is a verb that means "to pass" or "to go by," and it's used almost exclusively with time.

You won't hear elapse used with anything besides time. You wouldn't say "the car elapsed" or "the event elapsed." It's always time that elapses.
The adjective form is elapsed: "The elapsed time was four minutes and thirty seconds."
Lapse
Lapse works as both a noun and a verb, with several related meanings:
