The word comes from Latin "praevaricari," meaning "to walk crookedly." Someone who prevaricates takes a crooked path around the truth instead of approaching it directly.
The Difference in Practice
Both words involve dishonesty or evasion, but the method differs:
- Equivocate focuses on what is said. The words themselves are slippery, designed to mean different things to different listeners.
- Prevaricate focuses on how someone behaves. The person dodges, delays, or redirects rather than answering.
A politician who says "mistakes were made" is equivocating (passive language hides who made them). A politician who responds to a budget question by talking about education is prevaricating (changing the subject entirely).
Usage Notes
Both words are formal. In everyday conversation, you're more likely to hear "dodge the question," "beat around the bush," or "give a non-answer." In writing, though, "equivocate" and "prevaricate" carry precision that casual alternatives lack.
Neither word is interchangeable with "lie." Lying means stating something you know to be false. Equivocating and prevaricating both involve avoiding the truth without necessarily stating a falsehood.
