What Is Pathos?
Pathos is one of the three classical rhetorical appeals identified by Aristotle, alongside ethos (credibility) and logos (logic). Pathos appeals to the audience's emotions to persuade, motivate, or create a connection. The word comes from the Greek pathos, meaning "suffering" or "experience."

How to Identify Pathos
When you encounter an argument or piece of writing, ask yourself: is this trying to make me feel something? If the answer is yes, pathos is at work. Common signals include vivid sensory details, personal anecdotes, emotionally charged language, and appeals to shared values like family, justice, or safety.
Pathos does not have to be sad. A car commercial showing a family laughing on a road trip uses pathos through joy. A political speech that stirs pride in national achievements uses pathos through inspiration.
How to Use Pathos in Your Own Writing
- Choose specific details over general statements. "A seven-year-old girl lost her home" hits harder than "many people were affected."
- Use concrete imagery. Describe what the audience can see, hear, or feel.
- Connect the topic to something your audience cares about personally.
- Balance pathos with ethos and logos. Emotional appeals are most effective when supported by credibility and evidence.
Pathos vs. Bathos
Bathos is the unintentional shift from a serious or elevated tone to something absurd or trivial. If your attempt at pathos goes too far or strikes the wrong note, it can slip into bathos. For example, comparing a minor inconvenience to a great tragedy undermines your credibility rather than building sympathy.
When Pathos Works Best
Pathos is most powerful in persuasive essays, speeches, advertising, charity appeals, and narrative writing. It works well as a complement to logical arguments. An essay that presents solid data (logos) from a credible source (ethos) and then connects that data to a human story (pathos) will be more convincing than any single appeal used alone.
