What Is an Octave?
An octave is the interval between one musical pitch and the next pitch with the same letter name, either higher or lower. The higher note vibrates at exactly twice the frequency of the lower one. Because of this doubling, the two notes sound remarkably similar to the human ear, almost like the same note at a different height.
For example, if you play middle C on a piano and then play the C one group of keys to the right, you've moved up one octave. The distance between those two C notes spans eight white keys, which is where the name comes from (Latin octo means "eight").
Octaves are fixed intervals. Every octave covers the same frequency ratio of 2:1, regardless of which note you start on.
What Is a Scale?
A scale is a sequence of notes arranged in ascending or descending order according to a specific pattern of intervals. Scales provide the raw material for melodies and harmonies. Different interval patterns produce different scales, each with its own character and mood.
Common types of scales include:
- Major scale (whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half): Bright and uplifting
- Natural minor scale (whole-half-whole-whole-half-whole-whole): Darker, more somber
- Chromatic scale: All twelve semitones within an octave
- Pentatonic scale: Five notes per octave, widely used in blues, rock, and folk music
A scale typically spans one octave, but musicians often practice scales across two or three octaves for technical development.
How They Relate
A scale lives within an octave. The octave defines the boundaries, and the scale fills in the notes between the lower and upper pitches. Think of the octave as the container and the scale as what goes inside it.
You can play the same scale starting from different octaves on your instrument. A C major scale played in the third octave uses the same note pattern as a C major scale played in the fifth octave, just at a higher pitch.
