Both words relate to proportions out of 100, but they follow different grammatical rules. The distinction is straightforward once you know when each one applies.
The Basic Rule
- Use percent (or the % symbol) with a specific number.
- Use percentage without a specific number.
Percent: Sales increased by 12 percent. Percentage: A large percentage of voters stayed home.

What Does Percent Mean?
Percent literally means "per hundred." It's used when you have a definite figure.
- Only 30 percent of applicants were accepted.
- The interest rate rose by 0.5 percent.
- She scored 95 percent on the final exam.
You can write "percent" as one word, two words ("per cent," mainly British), or as the symbol (%).
What Does Percentage Mean?
Percentage refers to a proportion or share without specifying the exact number. It often pairs with adjectives like "large," "small," "high," or "significant."
- A significant percentage of the budget goes to salaries.
- What percentage of the class passed?
- Only a small percentage of applicants qualify.
Percent vs. % Symbol
In formal and academic writing, spell out "percent" after a number. In scientific, technical, and data-heavy writing, the % symbol is standard. Most style guides accept either form as long as you're consistent.
- Formal: The unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent.
- Technical: The unemployment rate fell to 4.2%.
Subject-Verb Agreement
This trips up many writers. When "percent" or "percentage" is the subject, the verb agrees with the noun in the "of" phrase that follows:
- Fifty percent of the cake was eaten. (cake is singular)
- Fifty percent of the students were absent. (students is plural)
- A large percentage of the work is done. (work is singular)
- A large percentage of the workers are satisfied. (workers is plural)
Percentage Point vs. Percent
These are not the same thing. If an interest rate rises from 5% to 7%, that's an increase of:
- 2 percentage points (the arithmetic difference)
- 40 percent (the proportional change: 2/5 = 40%)
Confusing these in financial or statistical writing is a serious error.

Summary
Use "percent" when a number appears before it. Use "percentage" when no number is attached, typically with adjectives describing the size of the proportion. And remember that a percentage point is not the same as a percent.
