How to Use 'For' as a Conjunction (With Examples)

How to Use "For" as a Conjunction

The word for is best known as a preposition (wait for, ask for, work for), but it also functions as a coordinating conjunction meaning because or since — introducing a reason or explanation.

For as a Conjunction: Meaning "Because"

As a conjunction, for introduces a clause that gives the reason for what was stated in the preceding clause. It is equivalent to because or since, but carries a more formal, literary tone.

  • "She did not attend the meeting, for she had fallen ill the night before."
  • "He chose his words carefully, for the stakes were high."
  • "They celebrated, for the project had finally been approved."
  • "The team worked through the night, for the deadline could not be moved."

Key Rules

1. It joins independent clauses. The clause before for and the clause after it must each be able to stand alone as a sentence.

2. A comma precedes for. When for functions as a conjunction, it is preceded by a comma: She stayed late, for the work was not finished. Without the comma, for reads as a preposition.

3. It cannot start a sentence. Unlike because, conjunctive for does not appear at the beginning of a sentence. "For she was tired, she left early" is not standard. "She left early, for she was tired" is correct.

Register and Tone

Conjunctive for is formal and literary. It appears frequently in 18th and 19th century literature, legal writing, and formal prose. In everyday writing and speech, because or since is almost always the natural choice. Use for when the tone calls for gravity or formality.
