Grammar Patterns with "Suggest"

Suggest + gerund (-ing form)

This is the most common pattern in everyday English.

He suggested meeting at the café instead.

Suggest + that + subject + base verb (subjunctive)

In formal writing, the verb after that stays in its base form regardless of the subject.

I suggest that she arrive early. (Not "arrives")
The committee suggested that the policy be revised.
He suggested that everyone submit their reports by Friday.

This subjunctive form is standard in American English. In British English, should is often inserted: "I suggest that she should arrive early."

Suggest + noun

What NOT to Do

Never use "suggest" with an infinitive (to + verb). This is one of the most common errors.

Incorrect: I suggest to go home early.
Correct: I suggest going home early.
Also correct: I suggest that we go home early.

Do not confuse "suggest" with "say." Suggest carries an element of advice or recommendation. Say is neutral.

"She said we should leave" (reported speech, neutral)
"She suggested we leave" (she recommended leaving)
